| In southern Spain, beyond the rolling plains of
Andalusia, tucked among the Sierra Nevada foothills north of Granada, a fine Arab fortress from the 13th
century crowns a rocky outcropping. For hundreds of years the fortress
served as a strategic haven and strong-hold, controlling access to the long valley whose view it commands.
For a brief shining moment, it was ours. From December 29, 1999 until January 2, 2000, the fortress and the unsuspecting town over which it keeps silent watch withstood a siege the likes of which there has not been since the middle of the first half of the last millennium. Past assaults and defenses of the battlements at this glorious medieval site held great riches and vast tracts of land in the balance of their outcomes, but our band of nearly sixty adults and eight kids were merely treated to one of the great new years - new millenium celebrations we've heard of. Click on the links below to learn a bit about how this affair came to fruition, see some of the places we didn't choose for our celebration, and read about the details of what we did while we were there. |
